May 12, 2011 in Delft, the Netherlands (SP)
Multimedia Restoration: Vóórkomen of Voorkómen

Multimedia Restoration: Vóórkomen of Voorkómen (a Dutch word joke, meaning, "Make it happen" or "Prevent it"). The symposium considers restoration of images and video from two perspectives. Namely, distortions do occur no matter what, and therefore restoration cannot be prevented in many cases. And, preventing restoration is always the better option and this is actually happening through the abundance of new camera and sensor technologies. The first speaker (Prof. Kokaram, Trinity College, Dublin) will consider the history and achievements of restoration, and will discuss cases where distortion simply exit and restoration is unavoidable. The second speaker concentrates on the practical use of restoration in today's digital world. The final speaker (Prof. de Haan, Eindhoven University of Technology) will discuss technologies to avoid restoration, such as sensors, motion compensation in cameras and handhelds, etc. The symposium interprets restoration pragmatically broad, i.e. also geometric distortions are considered (if the speakers wish so).

Jan Biemond was born in De Kaag, The Netherlands. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, in 1973 and 1982, respectively.

April 8, 2011 in Leiden, the Netherlands (Section)
IEEE milestone on Superconductity and symposium

Superconductivity is one of the most peculiar phenomena in nature. It was discovered by professor Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and his collaborators at the physics laboratory of Leiden University on 8 April 1911. On that historic day they observed for the first time the sudden disappearance of the electrical resistance of mercury at a temperature of 4.25 degrees above absolute zero. Superconductivity is one of the many great surprises that were made possible by the opening up of the new field of low temperature physics by Kamerlingh Onnes when he successfully liquefied helium for the first time three years earlier. For this achievement he received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1913.

On Friday 8 April 2011, we will celebrate the centennial of the discovery of superconductivity with a one day symposium and at the end of the day the dedication of two plaques at the former Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory in Leiden, the Netherlands. The plaques are donated by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), one of their prestigious 'Milestone Awards', and by Philips Research to commemorate that Gilles Holst, one of the members of Kamerlingh Onnes's team, later became their first Director.

The organizing committee would like to invite you to join us in the celebration of 100 years of superconductivity. For a full program and registrations, please visit the website of the event. On this site you will also find a more detailed program and information on IEEE Because of the limited number of available seats we urge you to register before 15 February 2011.

For more information on IEEE milestones, please visit their webpage. The Milestone on Superconductivity is initiated by the IEEE council on superconductivity, and supported by the Benelux section.

March 10-17, 2011 - Amsterdam, the Netherlands (CEDA-ES)
COURSE ON ADVANCED COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE by professor Yale Patt, University of Texas, Austin

Using computers to solve problems requires starting with a natural language formulation of the problem and systematically transforming it until one has a machine language (ISA) specification of the problem (i.e., a program). This then is executed on the implementation hardware. As Moore's Law continues to provide more and more transistors on a chip (50 billion transistors running at a clock speed of greater than 10 GHz in a few years), application specialists continue to think up more and more applications that require these additional processing capability. The ISA is the interface between the software that produces a program and the hardware that carries it out. The ISA is implemented by a microarchitecture that is constrained by trade-offs such as performance, power consumption, cost, reliability, availability, etc. In this course, we will examine some of these tradeoffs, in light of the increasing transistor count and the fundamentals of microarchitecture. Our study will be grounded in fundamental principles of microarchitecture, but will involve current state-of-the-art approaches.

The course is organized by HiPEAC, TUDelft and the IEEE Benelux Embedded Systems Chapter

General assembly and Meet the fellows

On the 16th of February, the IEEE Benelux section will hold its General Assembly in the Arenberg Castle, in Leuven, Belgium (the route description to the department of electrical engineering, and the castle is on the same campus: Route to the event).

During this meeting, there will be first an introduction on the section, with the election of the new committee. The main part of the meeting is named "meet the fellows". During this part, 3 newly elected fellows will present the evolutions that are ongoing in their field of expertise and the road to come.

The grade of IEEE fellow is a distinction bestowed upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. They are considered to be the leaders in their field. The Benelux section has a total of 89 Fellows (or 2.4 % of its members), which amongst the highest of the Region.

The program is as follows (to be updated, see also the pdf file):

Program:
  • 19h30: IEEE Benelux Section General Assembly (members only)
Georges Gielen -- Section Chair 2009-2010
Introduction on the Benelux Section & Approval of the Benelux ExCom 2011-2012
  • 20h00: Robert Puers - IEEE Fellow 2011, K.U.Leuven
    Implantable Microelectromechanical systems
    • ABSTRACT: Medical Microsystem research at ESAT-MICAS - It will be shown how in a period of 30 years, the research topic of MEMS and implantable electronics has evolved from simple FWO projects to an international recognized research centre. The main research drivers were implantable sensing systems for wireless monitoring of patients and animals. Devices developed range from bladder and eye pressure monitoring, over orthopedic implants equipped with sensors for diagnosis and improved therapy, to implanted pumps for assisted blood perfusion in e.g. the liver organ. To this purpose, the technological facilities that enabled several generations of Ms and PhD students to gain hands-on expertise in the field of MEMS design and fabrication, and small sized medical implants had to be established and maintained. The succes of this effort recently evolved in the decision by the University Authorities to support the research with an entirely new lab, that provides a multidisciplinary core facility to enhance existing research, as well as to enable new collaborations, especially in the field of biomedical engineering.
  • 20h30: Jean-Paul Linnartz - IEEE Fellow 2011, Eindhoven University of Technology
    Security with noisy data
    • ABSTRACT: Traditional security algorithms require cryptographic keys that are perfectly reproducible. Even the smallest misspelling in a computer password leads to a completely different output after applying a hash function. When biometric features or random process spreads in an IC are used to create a cryptographic key, special preprocessing is needed to ensure exactly reproducible results. Ensuring that this preprocessing does not reveal any information about the secret keys, has been the key breakthrough, which is currently commercialized by two ventures in Eindhoven. It enables the secure and tampersafe storage of secrets in ICs for mass market electronic devices and in smart cards. Also, it allows the secure use of biometrics even in cases where the verifying party (e.g. foreign governments, local shops, bars, operators, public transport) may not fully trustworthy.
  • 21h00: Michel Defrise - IEEE Fellow 2011, University Hospital UZ-VUB
Thoughts on mathematics, electrical engineering, and tomography
    • ABSTRACT: After rapidly zooming down from the electrical engineering research field to three-dimensional tomography with ionizing radiation and related mathematical and algorithmic problems, the talk will focus on recent results, which have modified the understanding of data sufficiency and stability for tomographic image reconstruction from incomplete data. The practical impact of these results will be briefly discussed.
  • 21h30: Networking reception
For those that are interested, there will be the opportunity to gain some information about the procedures to become an IEEE Senior Member or IEEE Fellow and make the necessary contacts during the reception.

Please send an email to to register for the meeting, which is free for members.

Security with Noisy Data

The Eindhoven region plays an important role in the field of security with noisy data. Philips Research, Eindhoven, initiated pioneering work in this field. This resulted in two spin-off companies, Intrinsic-ID and Priv-ID. Intrinsic-ID offers solutions to securely stored cryptographic keys in smart cards and consumer devices such as digital TV-decoders that can be subject to reverse-engineering attacks. Priv-ID uses similar concepts to provide privacy protection in biometric authentication, even if the verifier cannot be trusted fully. The Holst Center has developed a CMOS IC prototype for generating keys for smart cards and consumer devices. At Eindhoven University of Technology, the Department of Electrical Engineering made significant progress in the information-theoretic analysis of privacy leakage in biometric systems, while at the Department of Mathematics the Eindhoven Institute for the Protection of Systems and Information focuses on information security in a broad sense.

The Symposium intends to bring together researchers from industry, start-ups, institutes, and academia in Eindhoven, for sharing and discussing recent developments in the field of security with noisy data.

7-9 July, 2010 - Enschede (Nl)
IPCC 2010, annual conference on Communication in a Self-Service Society.

logo

The move to self-service has important consequences for everyone who uses information technology to communicate. For example, Web 2.0 features enable the public to contribute to or amend (technical) documentation. User forums, weblogs (blogs), and wikis have become important sources of information about almost every conceivable topic. The roles of information creator and information user are becoming interchangeable. Administrative organizations such as banks, insurance companies, and government agencies increasingly use the Internet as the channel for transactions with their public. Health organizations are using the Internet for communication purposes, from health advice and consultation to remote monitoring of patients.

This raises important questions. What are the social and economic implications of the self-service world? What are the consequences of the "digital divide" if everyone is expected to "help themselves?" How can we support the development of self-service environments that make sense and empower the public to put them to good use?

We invite you to explore these questions and other issues at IPCC 2010. Full conference program and registration information is available at the IPCC 2010 website.
