Dear IEEE Member,1. GOLD and Professional Activities
During the previous meeting of the IEEE Benelux Executive Committee, Emre Ayranci has been appointed as the new IEEE Benelux GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade) Coordinator and the IEEE Benelux Professional Activities Coordinator. The next GOLD/Professional Activities event (jointly with Germany) will take place in Leuven on 20-21 October 2007, see also http://www.ieee.nl/events.html and http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~dvherten/weekend/.
2. Elections for IEEE President, IEEE Region 8 Director, and Technical Activities Vice President
Annually, the IEEE members are requested to participate in the IEEE elections. Now is your opportunity to provide input to determine who will serve as IEEE President-Elect, IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect, and Technical Activities Vice President-Elect in 2008. The IEEE Annual Election ballots have been mailed to all eligible IEEE voting members (i.e., all members, except undergraduate students and associate members).
The annual election candidate biography booklet will only be provided to newly joined members who are eligible to vote for the first time in the annual election, those who have been elevated to Member or Graduate Student membership grades on/or before 30 June 2007, and those members who voted by paper ballot in the 2006 election. Members who transmitted their ballot electronically, or did not vote in the 2006 election, will not receive the candidate biography booklet. However, access to these materials will be available electronically via the IEEE annual election website.
Why not going the easy way and vote electronically at https://www.directvote.net/ieee/? And why not do it right now? Log in using either your IEEE Web account (with your username and password) or using the control number and E-signature supplied to you on the paper ballot received in the mail. You will be able to view the candidate biographies and photos during the online election process.
3. Conferences in the Benelux
I would like to draw your attention to several conferences (with or without active participation of our Chapters) that take place in our Section during 2007. 29-30 November 2007 - Veldhoven: ProRISC 2007, the 18th Annual Workshop on Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing
29-30 November 2007 - Veldhoven: SAFE 2007, the Annual Workshop on Semiconductor Advances for Future Electronics and Sensors
6-7 December 2007 - Eindhoven: Annual Benelux Biomedical Engineering Symposium
If you are aware of other conferences and events that take place in the Benelux, please notify us at
. We would like to make the Section's web site your starting point for all IEEE-related issues, but we can only do so with your help.
Best regards,
Martin Bastiaans,
IEEE Benelux Section Chair.
Newsflash 24 March 2007
Dear IEEE Member,IEEE president-elect candidate Marc Apter will visit the Benelux Section on 10 April 2007 and will present a talk entitled "Computer Security, Explaining it to Managers and Executives". His presentation is preceded by a gathering with the Benelux Student Branches, and followed by a presentation by ASB-Security, Eindhoven. After the presentations, there will be a reception during which IEEE Members can speak with Marc Apter in a casual atmosphere. More information, especially for Student Branches, can be found on this web page. The whole event takes place at Eindhoven University of Technology. If you want to attend, and meet and discuss with president-elect candidate Marc Apter, please send an email message to the Section secretary at benelux@ieee.org. Marc's presentation starts at 16:00 hours.
This is your chance to speak directly to the person who might be elected president of the IEEE by the end of this year. Do not miss it!
More events in the near future can be found on the events page of the Section's web site at http://www.ieee.nl/. From the future events, I would like to mention a lecture on 29 March 2007, again at Eindhoven University of Technology, organized by the IEEE Benelux Information Theory Chapter; Prof. Raymond Yeung from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, will then speak about "Network coding theory and network error correction". The presentation starts at 15:00 hours in the University's Auditorium, lecture room 10.
Since the website will be updated frequently, its content may change rapidly, in particular the list of events that take place in the Section's territory. So, visit it often, and check the events page at http://www.ieee.nl/events.html to learn about things that are going to happen in the near future. And if you miss something in the website or have any remarks on it, please tell us how we can improve it. We try to make the Section's web site as complete as possible, so that an IEEE Benelux member will always succeed in finding there any IEEE-related information that he or she is looking for.
And last but not least. Two students from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Wilm Decré and Jan Verveckken, have been selected to present their papers entitled "Application of a generic constraint-based programming approach to an industrially relevant robot task with geometric uncertainties" and "Design of inverse controller with cross-coupling suppression for UPFC series converter", respectively, at the orals finals of the 2007 IEEE Region 8 Student Paper Contest, which will take place in Warsaw, Poland, as part of IEEE Region 8 EUROCON 2007, the International Conference on "Computer as a Tool" (9-12 September 2007). One of the other finalists, Emre Ayranci, who prepared his paper "Enhancement of VCO linearity and phase noise by implementing frequency locked loop" at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, is now also a member of our Section. So, three out of five finalists will be from the Benelux Section!
Best regards,
Martin Bastiaans,
IEEE Benelux Section Chair.
Newsflash 24 January 2007
Dear IEEE Member,At the IEEE Benelux Section's General Meeting in Eindhoven, 19 January 2007, three new Executive Committee officers were elected: Martin Bastiaans, Chair; Georges Gielen, Vice Chair; and Ralph Wijshoff, Secretary. Two officers were re-elected: Dirk Rabaey, Treasurer (B), and Jan Bergmans, Treasurer (NL). The previous Chair, Damien Macq, and the previous Secretary, Edgard Laes, became automatically the Junior Past Chair and the Junior Past Secretary, respectively. On behalf of the present Executive Committee, I would like to express my thanks to Damien Macq and Edgard Laes for the work that they have done during the past two years.
You can find the list of all the officers of the Executive Committee (elected, appointed, and ex officio) on the Section's website at http://www.ieee.be/committee.html. While you are on our website, you may appreciate its new look, which is now in the IEEE preferred style. But what is more important: we have already filled the website with lots of new content, and we will continue to do so. I would like to make the Section your IEEE home, with the website http://www.ieee.be/ or http://www.ieee.nl/ as its valuable portal.
Since the website will be updated frequently, its content may change rapidly, in particular the list of events that take place in the Section's territory. So, come home often, and check the events page at http://www.ieee.nl/events.html to learn about things that are going to happen in the near future. And if you miss something in the website or have any remarks on it, please tell us how we can improve the site and how we can make you feel more comfortable in your IEEE home.
From the future events, I would like to mention especially the Seminar on the occasion of the IEEE Steinmetz Award for the 'Father of Wi-Fi' - Vic Hayes. The Board of Directors of the IEEE has elected Vic Hayes to receive the 2007 IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award, sponsored by the IEEE Standards Association, for his outstanding leadership in the development and global acceptance of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network standards, best known under the name of Wi-Fi. The seminar takes place on 7 February 2007 in Delft. For more details, please check our website.
Best regards,
Martin Bastiaans,
IEEE Benelux Section Chair.
